Elections 2010: Secretary

Sylvia Yan

Sylvia Yan

Do you await your weekly Galenicals newsletter with immense anticipation?

Well…if you don’t, I’m running for secretary to try to change your mind!

How?

  • The obvious topic of concern is emails. It has to be said that the emails we have been getting this year have been great, but I plan on adding a splash of colour to grab your attention. I’ll also make sure that I only send round emails relevant to YOU, i.e. no random clinical announcements sent out to pre-clinical years.
  • As rumours fly round the med school about upcoming medic events, don’t you just wish Galenicals would validate them and let you know what’s happening? I assure you that as plans formulate at Galenicals meetings, I’ll bash out those emails so you can all bookmark those dates into your social calender!
  • I’ve had experience working as a secretary at a law firm and at a GP surgery. Both jobs involved typing up lots of emails and letters as well as coordinating meetings to best fit everyone’s schedule – and I loved it!
  • Lastly, I just relish in sorting things out, I know it’s a bit geeky but give me emails and minutes any day and I’ll be in my element.

So, I hope I have managed to make emails sound interesting.

If you vote for me, then finding out about the latest Galenicals news will be the highlight of your week!

Shreya Bali

Shreya Bali

Hiya! For those of you that have never met me, I am Shreya and I’d like to be your next Galenicals Secretary. As a fellow medic there are a few things that I would like to change because, let’s face it, we all want Bristol to be the BEST!!

If elected I hope to:

  1. Make the weekly newsletter more reader-specific so as not to bore pre-clinical medics with random clinical info and vice versa.
  2. Ensure you are informed of confirmed changes to the medical curriculum ASAP before dubious rumours.
  3. Work with welfare and the rest of the committee to:
    • Organize support schemes for hopeful intercalators including guidance from past intercalators
    • Help the transition into clinical years by arranging a mentoring scheme and mock OSLERS from those in years above
    • Reduce the stress of MTAS applications that threaten to push people over the edge by organising a ‘Tips and Tricks for the MTAS’ session with current F1 doctors.

Why me ???

  • Currently I am secretary for two societies, taken more minutes than time itself and written the Marrow newsletter (published in the black bag).
  • I have taken a professional typing course and helped organise 6 years data for Bristol Refugee Rights.
  • I have also helped organize numerous events from the Glitter ball to Marrow clinics to bake sales
  • I am easy to reach, friendly and respond to my emails ASAP

So vote for me, more than just your ordinary secretary!

Jess Hamilton

Jess Hamilton

I’m Jess and I’m applying to be YOUR secretary next year.

Why vote for me?

  • I’m organized, efficient and approachable and I believe that these qualities are important in order to get things done effectively.
  • I will be am readily contactable so that I can relay all necessary concerns and questions to the relevant people.
  • The secretarial role entails being part of a cohesive committee. This is something I would be able to contribute to productively.
  • I believe that communication is an essential part of the role of secretary so will work hard to distribute clear, concise and relevant information to students. For example, I plan to continue the good work of this year’s secretary by sending weekly e-mails.
  • I have experience of working within a committee having been on the CPR in Schools Committee for 2 years.
  • I will ensure that all minutes from Galenicals’ and other relevant meetings are easily accessible so that students are fully aware of the goings-on at the mysterious Galenicals Headquarters! For instance, I feel that there should be more transparency about how our £45 membership is being spent.
  • I will endeavour to work in collaboration with Ros Forge in order to debut the much anticipated Galenicals Agony Aunt supplement.*
  • Vote for me if you want a no-fuss, friendly and reliable secretary!

*Disclaimer: This is not a guarantee as has not been authorised, discussed or even heard of by Ros herself.

Mia Kahvo

Mia Kahvo

My name is Mia and I would like to be your Secretary for next year.

The Galenicals newsletter helps keep up all informed of what is going on in the Med School, however, I think improvements can be made to make it a better tool for communication between students.

If elected, I would:

  • Produce separate (and short!) Pre-Clinical and Clinical newsletters to make sure you receive information appropriate to your year without having to trawl through notices not relevant to your year group.
  • Work closely with other members of the committee to make sure you are aware of any changes made to the structure of the Medicine course.
  • I know many people don’t check the Galenicals website often, so I would make sure you are made aware of any relevant additions, e.g new exam hints & tips, updates Year Guides etc.
  • Work with the Galenicals webmaster to produce a Noticeboard on www.galenicals.org to allow easier communication with regards to housing etc.

During my time in Bristol I’ve been involved with the Pre-Clinical Revue, Glitter Ball and Teddy Bear Hospital as well as acting as a Right To Play ambassador. This year I’ve been acting as the Secretary for the Wilderness Medicine Conference Committee so my e-mail writing skills have been sharpened :)
