The time has come to elect your year 2 rep…

This job involves liaising with the Galenicals committee to bring forward general issues relating to the course, attending the Student Staff Liason Committee meeting (a meeting we arrange a few times a year in order to discuss issues directly with the faculty).

The Candidates

Scott Mercer Scott Mercer

Having spent the last year running the Ents side of things with Winnie, organising the sale of tickets for various events and organising the end of exams ‘Itchy Feet’ party I feel I have gotten to know our year group pretty well. I would hope that with this, my year group feels I am approachable so that with any issues that arise people will both know about them and be fairly represented. I feel I can do a good job and look forward to the challenge.

I have many things I want to achieve building on last years experience as Year 1 Representative: Drawing upon feedback given to me, from you, this includes:

Re-instating an Academic Tutoring system at Bristol, with Clinicians and Medical students. I had a preliminary meeting with a faculty member regarding this scheme, and if re-elected I really want to push for this system to come back to Bristol, working with Galenicals to do so, there was positive feedback from the staff member and this scheme is a real possibility. Other medical schools have this kind of thing, why can’t we!

I am also keen to work with the faculty and Galenicals to improve the National Student Survey at Bristol University (especially feedback relating to the Medical Department), as this affects university league tables. I have lots of ideas to get better feedback for the department and I am keen to discuss with Galenicals further, if re-elected I will pursue this.

I have also discussed a revised (and improved) mode of exam feedback with the department. This would come with the Academic Tutoring system at Bristol. Other Medical schools provide systems like this and I would like to see it implemented at Bristol. Perhaps this would improve our National Student Feedback score, and thus Bristol’s position in league tables.

My previous experience in the role includes attending Galenicals and Departmental meetings last year, working successfully with the previous Galenicals committee and arranging one to one meetings with the department regarding Academic Tutors.

I communicated teaching feedback to both the Biochemistry and Anatomy departments at the university. The former provided somewhat unnecessary detail in a practical investigating enzyme assaying techniques. The systems anatomy teaching was not effective and I let the relevant people in the department know at the time, through the relevant channels for students to do so.

I also raised money for charity selling Year 1 Galenicals hoodies; this was arranged entirely by myself. I also sold Glitter ball, Clifton Zoo ball and medics vs vets vs lawyers tickets alongside the events reps. Other things included doing shout outs and making announcements.

I am familiar with the role, and know what needs to be done in the second year. Most of all, I really enjoyed being your first year representative, and I have much to contribute to improving things here at Bristol. If re-elected I’ll listen to people and voice their opinions to Galenicals and the Department.

I know more about how things operate and can work towards a stronger and better Bristol Medical School….Vote for Anthony Bates!!

Main Points to vote for:
• Academic tutors – Not currently at Bristol
• Exam feedback – Big changes are needed
• National Student Survey Improvements
• Experience in the role
• The above on top of what you would expect from a year rep!

If you feel that I have missed something important out of this please feel free to contact me and I will include it in Galenicals + Departmental meetings.

Thanks – don’t forget to vote!

Why I want to be year rep:

I want to go for the position of year rep because I would love to be more involved with the running of the year and try to make it a better one for everyone.

I think i’m a friendly and approachable person and would be happy to hear people’s opinions and thoughts about improvements to teaching or anything else, and then hopefully strive to make changes happen.

I think we have a fantastic year group and would look forward to working with and getting to know more people!

Tom Luo Tom Luo

Hi everyone. My name is Tom Luo and I am running for the year rep position.

I am an approachable person and believe in the importance of voicing our year’s concerns to the faculty. It is extremely valuable for the faculty to realise how the year group think about the way the system is run and to adjust it for our time at medical school. Change is needed and I want to make it happen.

I will always have the interests of the year at heart. So, whenever I am organising events with others, I will always fight for our corner.

Throughout the first year, I observed how Galenicals interacted with us. I aim to improve upon it and here are some of the changes that I am proposing:

• Improve exam feedback
It is important to understand what worked for us in the exam and what didn’t, so that we can learn for next time. Lectures and tutors should be organised to go over each of the individual sections and discuss exam technique.
• Will collect a survey from the year regarding Academic Tutors
It is important to gauge what the year wants from Tutors and work out a way for them to help us. I’ll need everyone’s input to interact with the faculty.
• Liaise with other years to sort out a inter year tutor system
A lot of the years above often like to revise what they did for systems studies and they could help tutor the second years and provide a clinical perspective as well as a friendly and informal view to life in the second year. Likewise, for those interested, I can organise academic help to the first years for those who want to review it.
• Work closely with the Ents Reps to make sure everyone has a great time out of lectures!

Thanks for taking time to read this. I hope this helps you to make the right decision :)
