The Successful Candidates Are:

Clinical VP – Rebecca Dwyer

Hello! My name is Rebecca and I would LOVE to be your Galenicals Clinical Welfare VP 2011-2012! I am passionate about student welfare!

My pledges:

-       We lost the old personal tutor scheme but the replacement system just doesn’t cut it, particularly when it comes to MTAS. After facing problems myself and having no one in the faculty to go to, I understand the paramount importance of having someone available who knows us.

-       I shall campaign for more constructive feedback, particularly after exams.

-       I will be there to give financial advice.

-       I will keep you updated on all news on MTAS, NHS reforms, GMC.

-       I will continue the amazing work of the current 4th year tutoring scheme.

-       I will work with the Pre-clinical VP to make sure our voices are heard!

I am committed and approachable, please give me the opportunity.

Pre-Clinical VP – Richard Igwe

Hey, I’m Richard and I want to be your next preclinical welfare officer. Years 1 & 2 are some of the most exciting years in medicine but can also be the most frightening and I want to be there to help guide you through it. I am organised, reliable and an experienced leader having both captained the Medics Basketball team and sat on the Pre-Clinical Revue committee. I’m also an outgoing and approachable person who is  comfortable talking to anyone and everyone, which I hope was demonstrated by co-presenting CLIC 2011.

As welfare officer I would:

  • Continue to improve the Mums and Dads scheme; 4th year tutoring scheme; Medics’ Fresh event
  • Encourage greater dialogue/interaction between pre-clinical and clinical years

If elected I will be ready to listen to and act on your worries and concerns no matter how small!

Secretary – Sally Harris

Hello! My name is Sally and I would love to be your Galencials secretary.
I am super organised and a speedy email sender. I have been involved in
lots of medic things over the years, including this year’s CLIC committee,
and it would be great to finally use my colour-coding skills for the
greater good.

If elected I would:
• continue to ensure the newsletter is kept up-to-date and relevant to you
• help medic societies with their mailing lists and liaise with them to
guarantee you are always adequately forewarned of events
• communicate the minutes of Student Staff Liaison Committee and
Galencials Committee to those who want them
• be completely committed to my role and help the committee with the
smooth running of Galencials for another successful year

So SALLY for SECRETARY – if the alliteration doesn’t do it for you then I
don’t know what else will!

Treasurer – Shun Yamanaka

As well as being an intercalator and international student, over the years I’ve been involved in many aspects of medic life, from running the medics hockey team though to being involved in BKAP, PCR, CLIC and Medics drama. As such, I know what makes us Bristol medics tick and, as treasurer, I hope to count on my experiences to help Galenicals make the right calls about where your important money goes.

Your vote gets you:

Better funding, support and communication with all medic societies.

Open discussions with members about what they want from Galenicals.
A commitment to getting better discounts with our Galenicals cards.

Finally; the fresher’s bar crawl, CLIC, Nantes etc are just some of the headline events which make you proud to be a Bristol medic- I’ll make sure that the money’s there so they stay that way.

Count on someone who can count: vote Shun for treasurer!

International – Anna Stilwell

I want to make sure more students are able to take full advantage of the
unique range of international opportunities Bristol offers and that they
are adequately supported in doing so.  Having recently returned from the
Erasmus exchange programme in Grenoble, I have a good idea of what the
problems and student concerns are. If elected, I would work to improve the
Erasmus programme by implementing pre-departure tutorials and language
lessons, providing better online tutorials and ensuring students get
sufficient post-erasmus revision sessions.  For international students, I
propose English lessons (for those who feel the need) and a buddy system.
Additionally, I want to  improve the support for eSSCs aborad and
electives and would introduce an international newsletter to advertise
conferences and international research.  So, VOTE ANNA as International &
Erasmus rep. to make sure your international experience is as great as it
should be!

Careers – Tim Stubbs

HAVE NO FEAR WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CAREER, VOTE TIM STUBBS!

“Why do I need to attend a careers evening? – I’m going to be a doctor”. Unfortunately, it’s just not that simple! There are so many options in front of us – Intercalation, Erasmus, Medicine, Surgery, General practice, Research – These are not easy decisions to make.

Thinking about your career whilst trying to clerk patients, pass exams and enjoy university is an overwhelming concept. Medicine is ruthlessly competitive and with so many options, an ever-changing NHS and constant modifications to the application systems it’s hard to know where to start!

I want to make career information available from the beginning, fully inform students about intercalated degrees, continue a firm support programme for Erasmus, organise multiple careers evenings and MTAS/FPAS advice sessions, and above all make sure Bristol students stand out from the crowd!

DHB – Ahmed Osman and Matthew Seager

To follow on from Fox and Macfaul,

The standard’s high, the order’s tall.

There are two lads who are keen and eager,

Who go by the names of Osman and Seager.

The boys that bought you the latest CLICendales,

Now want to boost agent orange sales!

Who would be better to provide the lash,

Whilst charging you minimal cash.

So come every Friday to the DHB,

For bar-crawls, socials and the odd TC!

But before we embark on this epic mission,

Let’s be honest there’s no competition!

From every creed and every religion,

Please just make that simple decision!

We will make the DHB:

1) THE best regular Friday watering hole for all medics – all years!

2) Completely medical-student-run (including bar-staff).

3) The central hub of all sports team socials, bar crawls and events!

4) A permanent and established venue in the best possible location.

VOTE AHMED AND MATT!!!

Ents – Katie James and Rae Olaitan

Over the past few years we’ve been dominating Bristol’s social

scene, and now we want to use our enthusiasm, imagination and powers of

persuasion to ensure Bristol medics have their most memorable year of

entertainment! We want to make sure your year is party-filled, with the

notorious classics (e.g. Bar Crawl, Christmas Party) reaching new heights,

as well as providing some chilled entertainment for when the partying has

worn you out! Not only do we want to make your nights bigger and better,

we are going to make the Galenicals card that you probably forgot existed

work like MAGIC at all the hotspots in Bristol, from Bunker down to Prive,

and all the bars we medics know and love!

Rae and Katie make the perfect team: we are organised, open to new ideas

and love to party…Medics are known for working hard, but we want to let

you party harder!!

Music – Anna Guyatt

My name is Anna and I’d love to be Galenicals’ Music Rep next year! There is absolutely no doubt that our medical school is bursting with musical talent, and I fully intend on seeking this out. I will organise concerts that will showcase this to the entire university, and make them envious, too!

Specifically, my plans are to:

  • Enthusiastically promote Galenicals Music, so that next year, we can populate our ensembles to the brim
  • Organise even more prestigious concerts!
  • Arrange rehearsal spaces/times for all ensembles, thus preventing logistical obstacles to rehearsals
  • Liaise regularly with ensemble managers and conductors
  • Ensure that ensembles continue to receive adequate financial support
  • Buy new music!

As a member of four medic ensembles (and having been in some since Freshers’ week), Galenicals Music is very close to my heart! And finally, remember… it won’t be quiet if you vote Guyatt!

Postgrad – Dale Seddon

DON’T GO MAD, VOTE DALE FOR POST-GRAD!

Hey! I am Dale and it would be my priviledge to be your next Galenicals
Postgraduate representative.

As a 2in1, I am all too familiar with the potential struggles of joining
Bristol Medical School as a post-graduate and I am dedicated to making
this transition as easy as possible! Despite arthritic knees, I have been
involved in Medics football and Clicendales since joining Bristol and
would love the opportunity to get more mature students involved.

A vote for Dale is a vote for…

- Regular and variable mature medic socials- From Bunker to Bingo to
accommodate ALL levels of maturity.

- A post-graduate voice on the Galenicals Committee dedicated to your best
interests.

- Mentoring – Reintroducing the 2in1 parenting/mentoring scheme for that
bit of extra help or advice during the hard times.

- Funding- Post-grads are often entitled to more funding than they know! I
will provide up to date information on any bursaries/scholorships/grants
that may be available.

- An approachable and friendly face for any problems or worries students
may have.

On a daily basis, us oldies are faced with the conundrum ‘a night out in
lizard lounge’ or ‘TV and cocoa in the lounge’….

Bristol mature medics. I hear you. I salute you.

So Vote Dale and he won’t fail.

Sports F – Emily Morrow

I’d love to be Sports Captain. Galenicals sports are a lot of fun and the best way to make great friends across all years of the medical school. I’ve learned this through being a committed member of Galenicals hockey, being treasurer of a university sports club, attending many sports club dinners and making the trip over to Nantes. Because of what I’ve got out of medics’ sports I’d like to provide that for you by:

  • Encouraging more people to sign up and help clubs accommodate greater numbers.
  • Cementing this year’s successful Alumni Weekend, firmly in the sports diary for students in all years.
  • Encouraging participation in the Bristol-Bath bike ride.
  • Ensuring that as sponsorship is harder to secure, clubs receive the funding they need from the UBHT.
  • And of course…..Organise bigger and better socials all year round, from Sports Club Dinners to Nantes and beyond!

Sports M – Mike Murphy

I want to be your sports captain for the next season. Medics’ sports are an integral part of our community, allowing us to mix with other years and have great fun together. Having captained the rugby team this season to great success, including the NAMS final and a historic victory in Nantes, I think I am more than right for the job. I know what it takes to have a fantastic social scene with the SCDs and an amazing weekend in France. I would like to:

  • Develop the Medics’ Fresh, providing freshers with more information and encouragement to join medic teams.
  • Ensure that in these times of economic downturn, the teams get the funding they require to cope with greater numbers.
  • Build on this year’s successful Alumni weekend and make it even bigger for all involved.

Have more social events from the infamous Sports Club Dinners to Nantes 2012.

Webmaster – Michael O’Loan

The new website is looking great, and is such a huge improvement over what we’ve had before. I’d like to maintain its high quality design and ease of use, and help keep everyone up to date with what’s going on in Galenicals.

I’ve been an assistant webmaster to the Burst student radio website here at Bristol this year, which saw a massive overhaul, and I have experience in both web design and web development from building an intranet for my local GP’s surgery. I’m also a massive computer geek and will work hard to make sure the website and email work for you, responding to suggestions and constantly tweaking and fixing things just for the fun of it.

I’d love to be the Technical Wizzard behind Galenicals, so please vote for me to be your webmaster!
