BMA
The BMA is a national organisation which works with the GMC, TMSC (The Medical Schools Council) representing the views of all medical students, doctors and medical academics.
To become a member of the BMA all you need to do is go online at www.bma.org.uk. Membership is free for the first year if you agree to pay by direct debit or credit card. The cost is £30 in the 2nd year and £36 per year after that.
All students are invited to the Medical Students conference in March and the Annual Representatives Meeting of the BMA in June- we will send out information about these nearer the time.
Galenicals have two BMA reps. One sits on the Medical Students Committee, attending conferences and working on national policies. The second is the Intra-School Chair and therefore your local rep, working with Jane Jenkins (the employment advisor for the Severn Deanery) on issues that affect us here at Bristol.
Why you should join the BMA:
- The BMA has a very large role in deciding the structure of medical training and as members you have the option to vote on new policies, ideas etc.
- The BMA is an independent organisation which acts as a trade union.
- You will have both local and national representation.
- The BMA provides information and advice on various issues specific to medical students including, electives, financial worries, revision courses.
- You will receive the Student BMJ and BMA news monthly.
- You can buy discounted textbooks and medical equipment.
- You can find support through AskBMA and the confidential counselling service.
