President Job Description


The role generally involves leading the team and making sure everyone is getting on with and is supported in their respective roles.

Specific roles include:

  • Attending faculty meetings to make sure any changes to the curriculum or to the medical school structure are done in the best interests of students.
  • Represent Bristol Medical School at national meetings about issues affecting medical students.
  • Chairing the regular Galenicals meetings to ensure all committee members are doing their jobs and have sufficient support in their roles.
  • Forwarding on any information/questions/queries etc to the relevant committee member.
  • Organising events to inform students about issues that concern them.

Committees that you sit on and frequency of meetings:

  • CCG (Core curriculum group): meets once a month to discuss curriculum issuesand proposed changes. Your opinion is highly valued and you play an active role.
  • MEC (medical education committee): meets about once every 8 weeks. More general meeting with more members. Again your opinion is highly valued.
  • SSC committee: Discuss issues with the SSCs in the curriculum. Approves applications for SSCs outside the local area. A small committee in which you have an active role. Meets 5-6 times a year.
  • Faculty board: a large committee with all the big cheeses of the medical school. Meet 3 times a year and discuss all current issues in the medical school. You play an active role and are expected to take part.
  • Annual Programme Review: happens once a year in July to summarise the year. The most important meeting of the year that you HAVE to attend.
  • UK Foundation Programme medical students board: meets 2-3 times a year in London to discuss and identify problems with the foundation programme application process (MTAS). There are representative from every medical school in the country which makes for an enjoyable day.
  • You also regularly get asked to attend other random meetings. For me this year these have included 5th year changes group, 4th year changes group and national student survey.
